A few years ago we lived on the fifth floor in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.  As far as tall buildings go not as far up as many that surrounded us.  But we really enjoyed our view.

Looking At The City

It is dark early Sunday morning in the city
And I see light in not a few apartments of high-rises to the north.
I take this to mean there are some preparing for church.

I’m also expecting to be told that the lights have counted among them false ones,
Pagans preparing for pleasure.
To worship at the mall, outdoor shrines, pursuits that would make me blush.
Angels of light, they warn us.

But it is so early,
and hope is strongest now.
The towers stand against a dark sky,
that grows lighter and lighter.
Soon, it will be full day.
